Genealogy Report for Jacob Zent and Susanna Hirschberger:

Descendants of Jacob Zent, Jr.

Generation No. 1

1. JACOB4 ZENT, JR. (JOHANN JACOB G.3, HANS JACOB2 ZEND, JOHANN MARTIN1) was born 31 Jan 1763 in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania1, and died 28 Oct 1845 in Baughman Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania2,3. He married SUSANNA HIRSCHBERGER 03 May 1785 in Swamp Reformed Church, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania4,5, daughter of ISAAC HIRSCHBERGER. She was born 30 Apr 1765 in prob. Pennsylvania6, and died 31 Mar 1841 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania7.

Notes for JACOB ZENT, JR.: 1790 Census, Dauphin County, PA lists: Jacob Zent, 1 male 16+, 2 males under 16, 2 females. (Note: listed next to Daniel, Conrad and Abraham Howser)

Jacob names in his will: (probated 1845) Samuel Zent and Jacob Bowman of Stark County, Ohio, the land on which daughter Susanna and her husband Jacob Snider now live; in trust for said Susanna and her children; Samuel Cover, married to daughter Elizabeth, $300, to purchase land in Crawford County, Ohio; children of son John, dec'd, his son Jacob; children of daughter Catherine Myers, dec'd, her son Samuel Miller; son Samuel; daughter Sarah, married to Samuel Spoonhour; Polly Wingert married to John Wingert; daughter Mary married to Jacob Bowman; daughter Nancy, lately married to John M. Green and now dec'd; Nancy's children; Son John, dec'd., has 4 children; the clothing belonging to me or my deceased wife are to be disposed of be my executors amony my heirs at private sale, if that cannot be done, then to the poor. Executors: Grandson Samuel Miller, son of my daughter Catherine, dec'd and Samuel Myers married to my grandaughter Susanna, being a daughter of my son John Zent, dec'd. An additional executor was Jacob Eberly, married to my grandaughter Polly, daughter of my son John Zent, dec'd. (Penn. Achives, 5th series, Vol. 7, p. 561)

Jacob was incorrectly identified as serving in the Revolutionary War under Captain Michael Moyer, 1778-1779 in "American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County, Pennsylvania". This is unlikely since he would have been 15 years old at the time. (This was his father, Jacob.) However, he most probably was the Jacob Zent that served in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1784 with Capt. Reams 6th Battallion, 3rd Class (Penn. Archives 6th series, Vol. 3, p. 541,548), and "Return of Male" 4th Compamy, 1st Battallion of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in 1786 (Penn. Archives 6th series, Vol. 3, p. 359). Since Dauphin County was established in 1785 (previously part of Lancaster County), this would explain the different locations.

Mathias Schneider
Jacob Schneider b... d...
m. Magdalene
Christian Schneider b... d... 1793
m. Susanna Margretha d... Jan 1767

(The above came from northern Switzerland near the Baden/Wurtemberg Germany boarder line by way of Holland, and England. They parted from Cowes, Isle of Wight, 7 July 1729 on the ship "Allen", James Craigie ship's master. These Schneider's arrived in Philadelphia and took the oath of allegiance to King George II, King of England, on 15 Sept. 1729. They then made their way to Weber-thal, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania where their friends George, Henry, & Jacob Weber (Swiss Mennonites) had settled some time earlier. (These Weber's later changed their name to Weaver))

Christian Schneider obtained 138 acres on the north & south of Conestoga Creek, adjoining the land of George Weber (this land was later conveyed to him by deed by Thomas & Richard Penn. Christian erected a cabin on the south bank of Conestoga Creek at a spring (land owned by John Trego in 1903, in East EArl Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa.) Christian lived here tile his death in 1793. (Death records of Christian and Susanna are in the Zeltenreich Church Records.) The descendants of Christian are buried in New Holland & Zeltenreich Reformed Church cemeteries.

John Michael, son of Christian, received a deed from the Executive Council of Pa. for 100 acres, adjoining his father's on the west, dated 4 April 1785. John Michael also purchased 44 acres and 146 perches from Peter & Barbara Worst which laid immediately north of his 100 acre tract. The original land purchased by Christian in 1733 passed out of the family in 1881 when Isaac Schneider, son of Christian Jr. died.

John Michael and his brother Christian Jr. erected a barn on the land originally held by their father in 1781. In 1903 this barn was still standing on the land then owned by Elais Martin.

Jacob & Mathais patented 250 acres of land northeast of Weber-thal, Center Reformed & Lutheran Church (now St. John's) is in Weber-thal.

Jacob also purchased land form William Morris.

There is currently a break in these records until the early 1800's. It appears the John Schneider listed in Lancaster Co., Pa. in the 1820 census, migrated to Ohio in 1828 or 1829. At this time the spelling was written as 'Snider'. The Pennsylvania Military Records listed John Schneider as serving in the Revolutionary War and being shot in the head. The researcher, Howard Snider, believes this same John Schneider who was wounded was the grandfather of John Schneider/Snider who moved from Lancaster Co., Rapho Twp., Manheim (Mannheim), Pa. to Ohio. No documents have been found to prove this at this time. Questions remain ... was this John Schneider the son of Christian or Jacob ???

The old John Snider farm and home is located southeast of Morges, Ohio, about ½ mile east of Morges. There were about 260 acres and some of the old buildings were known to be standing. Carroll Co. records at Carrollton, Ohio show George, James & Jacob Snider conveyed property to John Finefrock by quick claim deed (Lucetta's husband). The description of the John Snider farm was SE ¼ and E ½ and SW ¼ of Sect 11, Twp 16, Range 7 in Carroll Co., Ohio.

Here's what I know about grandmother Polly Zent. Her birthdate is Mar 19, 1799 and she was born in PA, she married John Wingert/Wingard on March 8, 1821. John was born in Franklin County PA Sept 13, 1798. Polly and John moved from PA to Stark County, OH sometime during the 1820's and they had four children, 3 sons and one daughter.

Today at the library I learned that Jacob Zent also lived in Franklin County (1830 census) and he probably had 6 daughters and 2 sons. Jacob lived in Dauphin county in 1790. His wife's name was Susannah.

Thanks Jim. There is much good info in your data. I'm not sure how much might be new as I did a pretty good job collecting Wingard data last summer. It will take some careful comparisons to refresh my memory and to discover any differences between your file and the others.

It's this reference to Montgomery County Kansas that I had seen before, can't remember where. Perhaps it was a posting by Lee Wingard or James Shafer??? When I first saw it, I think I assumed that it involved a migration of John Wingard and Polly Zent to Kansas. Thinking more about it, however, they would have been getting a bit old for such an endeavor. What I think really happened, is that their son Joseph Wingard migrated and stopped in DeKalb, Indiana. His son John E. Wingard (with Ella and sons) went to Kansas and became Montgomery County settlers. The reference in the Mont. County History is likely a mention of John E. Wingard's Ohio based grandparents. Well that's the theory. Will have to get a look at the actual history book some day.

Seems most probable then, that John Wingard and Polly Zent stayed and died in Stark County. Any clues there would be appreciated. Meanwhile, I'll scrub Stark County records a bit on line.

Turns out that the Wingard farm property which was turned over to John's sons Frank and Homer, was just a few miles north of where I lived for a few years in Independence Kansas. My wife's family (Theodore Wingard and Lucille Salsbury, son of E.T. Wingard, grandson of B.F. Wingard, ggrandson of Jacob Wingard....) also lived in Independence where Ted came to work for Sinclair Pipeline company in the late 1940's. Turns out that they were aware of the other clan of Wingards in Independence but thought they were not related -- farmers, go to different church, etc! When I was tracking this Wingard data, I discovered that they all shared the same GGGGrandparents - John Wingert and Polly Zent. Wonder what they'd have thought or done if they'd known how they were related?

I've got a couple photographs of B.F. Wingard, Avarintha, E.T. Wingard, Carma (Fried) Wingard on disk if you are collecting such stuff. They can be large files to copy, especially if they are not in your primary line of research!!! so I won't bother you with them here. Can send if you desire.
