[edit] Children of Jacob and JaneIn a letter dated Jan 1834 from Jacob Van Lear to his wife's sister Clarinda P Tate, Jacob said something about seven of his children: Jacob L is quite unwell, something wrong with his heart, cant exactly tell what; John A is now a young man, handsome; William L is small of his age, no genius, and has got quite stout; Saml F is rather stupid boy; James P to judge from his eye its brilliance and quick motion has more genius than half the rest put together; Mary F & Evalina E are both healthy mischievous noisy talking bratty, very pretty. Jacob's household on census records: 1820 census: 1 male 26-44 (himself), 1 female 26-44 (wife Jane), 3 males 1-10 (sons Jacob L, John A, Wm L) 1830 census: 1 male 40-49 (himself), 1 female 30-39 (wife Jane), 1 male 15-19 (son Jacob L), 2 males 10-14 (sons John A, Wm L), 1 male 5-9 (son Saml F), 1 male under 5 (another son?), 1 female 20-29 (?), 1 female under 5 (daughter Mary F) 1840 census: 1 male 50-59 (himself), 1 female 40-49) wife Jane), 1 male 20-29 (son Wm L), 1 male 15-19 (son Saml F), 1 male 10-14 (son James P), 1 female 30-39 (?) 1 female 10-14 (daughter Mary F), 1 female 5-9 (Evaline E) In addition, a tree on Ancestry.com shows a daughter Caulina C who died Feb 1822 (per a condolence letter of that date) and never showed up on the census. The identity of the extra female in 1830 and 1840 is unknown. |
