  3.   In Samuel Smith's notes published as part of Source:Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Records of Littleton, Massachusetts., p. 408, Mary is identified as a daughter of Joseph Hartwell and Ruhamah Cutter, making her sister of Joseph Hartwell who married Israel's sister Hannah. However, the marriage date is shown as 21 Jun 1744, probably confusion caused by the guardian date mentioned below. Source:Densmore, Lyman Willard. Hand-Book of Hartwell Genealogy, 1636-1887, p. 48, says Mary in her 21st year, apparently daughter of Joseph and Ruhamah Hartwell (they being the last mentioned gen. 3 couple, Mary indicated as gen.4, the layout of this book being less clear than could be desired), is said to have chosen Israel Reed of Lexington [sic] as guardian in 1744 (since her father died in 1743) and later married his son Israel. Source:Cutter, Benjamin. History of the Cutter Family of New England does not show any daughter Mary in the family of Joseph Hartwell and Ruhamah Cutter, but one would suspect Joseph's probate file should be able to verify the above identification.
  4.   Source:Reed, Jacob Whittemore. History of the Reed Family in Europe and America, demonstrating its own lack of clarity, appears to skip this generation altogether. It goes from Israel born 1722 to Israel and Hannah, to an Israel born 1747 who married Martha Temple and had son Israel born 1768 and subsequent children, with no connecting details. Further, Martha Temple is incorrect. The Israel born 1722 is the husband of this page, and his son Israel, born in 1747, married Jemima Temple, and they had a son Israel born in 1768, as recorded in Littleton records.
