Beaver Twp. was a subdivision of Guthrie Co. that laid in the southern tier, the second twp. from the east line of the county. Beaver, Spring, Deer Creek and North River are the principal streams. The first settlement in Beaver Twp. was made by Hiram Haskins on May 5, 1851. He was born in NY on October 27, 1802 and was the son of James and Margaret White Haskins. He moved to IN where he married Sarah Miller, a daughter of David and Elizabeth Miller. They moved to Adams Co. then to MO in 1840. In 1844 he emigrated to IA, Davis Co. then on to section 3 the land upon which Glendon now stands. On May 15, 1854 he died at 49 yr. 6 mo. 19 da. He built a cabin north of the bridge at Glendon. He had seven children with Sarah Miller and two children by his second wife. Francis M. Haskins, son of Hiram and Sarah Miller was born January 22, 1844 and arrived at Beaver Twp. on May 5, 1851. He married Sarah M. Branson on October 19, 1866. She was the daughter of John Francis and Margaret Ann Mains Branson. They had five children. His trade was a mason and a farmer and he served in the Civil War from 1862-1865. His brother, Charles Haskins, was born in Adams Co. IL June 22, 1833 and he came to Glendon IA in 1852.
