Reflecting back to my childhood to those happy carefree summer days we spent on Grandpa's farm brings to mind bits and pieces of pure contentment and joy. It was so fun playing in the sandpile (once we picked all the stickers out!) behind the pumphouse. I remember adopting a kitten from a new litter each time we went to Grandpa's. The kittens were such 'fraidy' cats that half the fun was trying to catch one. Some of my fondest memories are of sitting on a bale of hay in the barn watching Grandpa work with the cows at milking time, riding on the tractor or in the old black pickup with him, "helping" him irrigate the fields, and getting one of those wet stickery kisses every time we visited.

The farm was such a great place to play and imagine. I can still almost smell the pungent poplar leaves piled high in the ditches in the fall as we created castles and forts. I was sure there were fairies that lived under the willows along the ditch bank in back of the barn. We never got tired of searching for arrowheads in the sandy fields on the way to the river. Even though playing in the haystacks and chicken coop were exceptional fun, the old garage and tool house held such treasures that you could not resist snooping for hours.

One of the most treasured things I remember about Grandma is what a good cook she was. Breakfast was always a delight of choices - cereal, eggs, grapefruit, and my favorite - a toasted piece of her homemade bread. If there were leftovers we got to take them out and spoon them into the cat's dish. It was about the only way you had a chance to catch a cat!

I remember crisp spring days running down the ditch banks searching for spears of asparagus, going on bird egg hunts, sitting on the front porch in the afternoon and listening to the owls down the road, Grandma teaching us how to make hollyhock dolls, and sitting underneath the green apple tree with my salt shaker munching on apples to my heart's content.

One particular summer day we discovered that there was a magpie nest at the top of that apple tree. I decided I just had to see if there were baby birds inside. I was warned by Grandpa that it might not be such a good idea. I was determined that I was big and brave enough to do it anyway. I climbed and climbed and came within an arms's length of the nest before I realized how high I was and how weak the branches seemed. My mother down below told me just to back down, but by then I was plain paralyzed! Grandpa surveyed the situation, calmed my cries, and climbed up to rescue me. What a relief when those strong, safe arms wrapped around me!

That is what I have felt my whole life from Grandpa and Grandma Barnes - love and security. I know they considered themselves just common ordinary "simple" folk, but I would consider it the highest compliment if, when I am gone, that is what is said about me too. - LINDA CARTER MYRUP - 7/4/99
