HENRY DAYTON (aka DATEN), b. 1700 Brookhaven, Suffolk Co, NY, d. 1762, Brookhaven/Setauket, Suffolk Co., New York , m. in 1727 Abigail Norton, b. 1704, Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., NY d. Abt 1765, Brookhaven/Setauket, Suffolk Co., New York . Their children include: Henry JR , Norton (named for mother's family) , and David b 1730, Per LDS records: " Abigail Norton was born in 1704, in Setauket, Suffolk, New York Colony, British Colonial America, her father, Jonathan Norton, was 29 and her mother, Mary Mosher, was 19. She married Henry Dayton about 1727. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. Abigail died in 1765". Her father Johathan Norton, b 1675 Brookhaven/Setauket, NY, was son of Nathanial Norton, b 1639 Salem, MA, d. 1685 Brookhaven, MA m. Mary Mills; who was son of George Norton, b 1610 England, arrived Salem MA, d. 1684, m. Mary Machias. Henry seems to have been the most prosperous member of the family in his direct line, up to his time. His will shows that he owned three houses and various lands in Brookhaven, CT, and also land in Eggharbor, Gloucester Co., NJ (gifted to 3ed son David). He had also provided funds for purchase of property in Colcester, CT, which his eldest son, Henry Jr., bought in his own name. Henry Sr Dayton was a member of the Setauket Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York. Henry Dayton's Last Will: "In the name of God Amen. The seventh day of Oct. ano Domini 1759 I Henry Daten of Brook Haven in the County of Suffolk Province of New York on Nassau Island Yeoman being low in health but sound in mind and memory thanks be to God for the same...first I give to my well beloved wife, Abigail Dayton besides her lawful dower the half of my dwelling house that I formerly lived in... Item, I give and bequeath to my eldest son Henry Daten all that farm or tract of Land in New England, that he now lives on...to his heirs and asignees for ever, likewise...five of my Long Lots on Long Island beginning at the most eastermost Lot... I give and bequeath to my second son Norton Daten the house and homestead of land I had of George Tucker during his natural life, also I give & bequeath to hime one third part of my meadow lying in the old Man's Meadow...likewise my upperland...the western acre lot together also with two large lots, lying near...during his natural life. I give to my well beloved [3ed] son David Daten my tract of land in Eggharbour in the County of Gloucester that I bought of Jeremiah Adams, to him his heirs & assignes for their own proper use forever... |
