HENRY ASHTON ALEXANDER was born on 12 May 1805, son of Col. Gerard Alexander and his first wife, Elizabeth Ashton Alexander. Henry married first Elizabeth Cole Irvin on 13 Oct 1828 Orange County, Virginia.1 He married second Sarah Ann Moorman, daughter of Samuel Moorman and Judith Clark, on 10 Jan 1838 Campbell County, Virginia. 2,3 He died on 12 Jun 1891 Campbell County, Virginia, at age 86.4 His will dated 7 Jul 1878 was probated on 10 Aug 1891 Campbell County, Virginia.5

Two of the Alexander sons, William and Edward, died during the Civil War. Samuel, who was in the War until its end, was apparently so badly affected by it that his father says "But if Samuel, my son's mind becomes perfectly restored..." in his will dated 7 July 1878.

Henry and Sarah Ann Moorman appeared on the census of 1860 in the Western Division, Campbell County, Virginia with their children, Mary E. , Samuel, William, Edward and Sally A.6 In the census of 1870, Sarah was still at home, and Henry’s widowed sister, Henrietta Ely, was with them.7 In 1880, Sally A. Nash and her husband, J. W. (John William) were living next door to her parents.8

ELIZABETH COLE IRVIN died before 1838.

Known children of Henry Ashton Alexander and Elizabeth Cole Irvin were: i. JACK COLE was born on 9 May 1830. He died on 11 Nov 1868 at age 38. ii. HENRY J. was born before 1838. He died circa 1840.

SARAH ANN MOORMAN was born on 25 Mar 1808.9 She died on 13 Feb 1892 Campbell County, Virginia, at age 83.10

Known children of Henry Ashton Alexander and Sarah Ann Moorman were as follows: i. MARY ELIZABETH called BETTIE, was born on 17 Jan 1839.11,12 She married Charles Jones Winston, son of Pleasant Winston and Elizabeth Cheadle Clark, on 24 Dec 1867 Campbell County, Virginia.13,14 She died on 1 Feb 1923 Campbell County, Virginia, at age 84.15,11 She was buried on 2 Feb 1923 at Hill's Creek.12 Her will dated 19 Jul 1922 was probated Campbell County, Virginia.16

CHARLES JONES WINSTON was born on 22 Aug 1837 Montgomery County, Indiana (His tombstone records his birthdate as 27 Aug 1837 in error).19 He died intestate on 16 Mar 1889 Campbell County, Virginia, at age 51.19,20,12 He was buried at Hill's Creek.12 He enlisted on 25 May 1861 in Co. G, 11th Infantry, Campbell County, Virginia. He was wounded in action 3 July 1863, and again 1 April 1865.

ii. SAMUEL MOORMAN was born on 21 Feb 1841. He died after 1878. He enlisted in Co. G, 2nd Cavalry on 13 May 1861 Campbell County, Virginia. He was paroled 13 Apr 1865 Lynchburg, Virginia.

iii. WILLIAM was born on 11 Dec 1842 Bedford County, Virginia. He died on 8 Sep 1861 at age 18 at Valley Mountain, Pocohontas County, Virginia. He is said to have died of dysentery.

iv. EDWARD CLARENDON was born on 13 May 1844.12 He was conscripted into, Co. G, 2nd Cavalry on 1 Feb 1864 Campbell County, Virginia. He was killed at Meadows Bridge on 16 May 1864, at age 20.12

v. THOMAS CLARK was born on 18 Feb 1846. He died on 5 Feb 1852 at age 5. He was buried at Flat Creek.

vi. SALLIE ANN was born on 27 Aug 1850. She married John William Nash, son of James Monroe Nash and Missouri Martin, on 29 Nov 1876 Campbell County, Virginia.21 She died on 14 Jun 1914 at age 63. She was buried at Flat Creek.

JOHN WILLIAM NASH was born on 16 Dec 1842 Virginia.23 He married second, Martha Breckinridge Withers Price. He died circa 1925 and was buried in Alderson, West Virginia.

vii. JUDITH FRANCES was born on 29 Nov 1853. She died on 7 Aug 1854. She was buried at Flat Creek.
