  2. Before their marriage, visits usually consisted of us kids trying to look interested in a litany of who had died, who was not good and expected to die, and the few who were recovering... Once married, Grosert became a wonderful surrogate Grandfather to us and would often choose to come and play crokinole with us. It sure made a difference in our attitude toward visits at Grandma's.
Grosert's engagement to Grandma Shiell came as a bit of a surprise to the entire family. They had all grown up knowing who he was but had no idea that romantic sparks were flying until the day Grandma invited "the kids" to a family dinner. Somewhere between first course and dessert, Grandma mentioned that she was thinking of getting married again and and wanted to know their thoughts on the subject. The reaction was mixed....although generally favourable... once everyone's jaws returned from the floor.
Grosert's relations with his step-children was interesting..Although everyone generally accepted their marriage and "Grandma and Grosert" were always welcome at everyone's house, I only once ever heard anyone refer to him as their stepfather. It was in connection to making Grosert's funeral arrangements. Unfortunately, Grosert never heard it but I am sure he would have been pleased.
