Notes From Lee Hylton: I had already come across your genealogy info on John Hilton a few weeks ago and found it to be very interesting. The names of the children are curious in that they match family names in the Hilton's that don't have clear connections with other Hilton families more heavily documented: - Obediance was the name of one of the daughters of my gggg-grandfather Elisha Helton, as well as the name of John Hilton's wife. This is not a name common in other Hilton familes in Virginia. - Henry is a name that appears in the Patrick County area, again from a group of Hiltons whose ancestors are not clear. - William is unusual in that it is a name that seems to be more associated with the Hiltons of Scott County VA (descendents of St.Mary's County MD Hilton family) and New York/New England Hiltons. - To further confuse things (for my research anyway), is that 2 sons of Elisha Helton had names that appear only in North Carolina Hilton families, and later in Kentucky and Tennessee (Pleasant and Alexander) and one of them was named Jesse which is a name that appears in nearly all branches of the family.. The only information I have on John Hilton and Obediance Cox: - John Hilton and Obedient Coke married November 24, 1757 in Goochland County, VA. [Source: The Douglass Register - parish records] - John Hilton and Obediance Cox a son named George born May 20, 1761. Baptised September 13, 1761 [same source as above] - Obediance Cox was the daughter of John Cox of Goochland - St. James Northam Parish. His will dated 1785 mentions sons Edward, Henry, and John [maybe this is where the name Henry was introduced into the Hilton family] and daughters Obediance Hilton and [Glafie?Gladys?] Davis [her first name was illegible]. So Obediance was still alive and apparently in Virginia as late as 1785. - A Hylton researcher's notes (Hatcher King, 1975) states that Jesse Hilton was the son of John Hilton and Obediance Cox and married Elizabeth Weddle, d/o Benjamin Weddle. - I received the following e-mail about 2 months ago: "Jesse is my ancestor. His daughter is Elizabeth b. in KY abt 1810 acc. to my undocumented info." - a book I had seen a few years ago on the early settlers of Kentucky mentioned John Hilton and his son Jesse (I neglected to write down the title or authors name). - Jesse Hilton served in Captain William Triggs Company in Lord Dunmores War 1774. - sometime between 1783 and 1787, Jesse Hilton moved to Kentucky. He had a land grant in Henry County VA in 1783, then appears on the Lincoln (KY) tax list of 1787 and Madison (KY) tax list of 1789, and 1810 census of Floyd County KY. Good luck with your research......... Lee Hylton [email protected] |
