The birth dates of the first four children are all recorded on dates that fall after the recorded dates of their baptism:

  • Joanna born either 29 Sep 1646 or 29 Sep 1647, but baptized 9 Nov 1645.
  • Patience born 2 Oct 1648, but baptized 21 Nov 1647.
  • Ephraim born 1 Oct 1649, but baptized 8 Apr 1649.
  • Manasseh born 1 Jan 1651, but baptized 9 Feb 1650/51.

The birth dates are probably all off by a year. Possibly, Manasseh could be explained away with double-dating, but it seems probable that the birth meant 1651/52, and all are simply off by a year.

There are several reasons for believing the church records are the correct dates:

  • The church records are recorded chonologically, which tends to make them more reliable.
  • Patience's death is recorded 1 Jul 1648, which would be before her recorded birth, indicating the birth is wrong.
  • Joanna's age at death, in her 83rd year on June 1728, so age 82, so born before June 1646, agrees with the baptism, not the birth.
  • The Kempton births are reported in PCR in the 1654 report, and then reported all at once, suggesting they were recorded after the fact.
