Emmett Campbell and Aura Dorman had been neighbors across a field when their families were young on the outskirts of Cassadaga, New York. Emmett sold seeds to the local farmers so knew almost everyone in the area. John and Aura Dorman were farmers. When Emmett Campbell's son, Emmett came down with polio the Campbell house was put under quarantine. The Campbells could not leave their house and no one else could visit them. Aura found a clever way to help out her neighbors. She would cook a meal, wrap it, walk out to the middle of the field between their two homes and set it on a rock. Emmett would retrieve the meal after Aura had walked away. After polio, Aura helped with young Emmett's physical therapy. She was a good, kind soul who helped neighbors and friends with food and simple health needs. A love grew between Aura and Emmett after Emmett's wife, Jennie, died.
