  3.   Source:Reed, Jacob Whittemore. History of the Reed Family in Europe and America is clearly confused.

    1. On p. 374, it says the wife of Elijah Reed, the son of Elijah and Sarah Reed, is unknown but his children were Bezaleel, Sarah, Solomon, Parnel, Elijah, and Alice. It is not clear how this is known, but there seems to be a direct tie-in between these grandchildren and their grandparents, since there is no mention of a wife (not based on birth records), residence (not matching names in same town) or the father's date death (not based on father's will). One would guess that a probate document from one of the grandparents, probably Sarah Reed who d. 1811, executed after her son Elijah's death 31 Aug 1816, might have named these children as heirs in right of their father.

    2. On p. 410, as a separate family, it shows the family of Elijah, s/o ---, and Lucy Washburn and the children are listed as Beza, Sally, Solomon, Pacoral, Elijah, Lucy, and Alice. Indeed Beza and Sally are listed as children of Elijah and Lucy Reed on p. 276 of Source:Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Middleborough, Massachusetts, Vital Records. On p. 295 are found Solomon, Parnel, Elijah, Lucy and Alice. So this particular family just seems to be a compilation of the Middleborouogh records, and from just this data, no conclusion as to Elijah's parents can be drawn.

However, the similarity, combined with the differences of these two records, make it clear these are not two separate families, but two independent sources describing the same family.

    3. In Source:Mayflower Descendant, p. 40:129, probate documents of William Reed of Middleborough who married Sarah Warren, dated 6 May 1776, list a son Elijah Reed as one of the heirs, though there is no birth record found for him in this family. Apparently in consideration of this, the appendix of History of the Reed Family, p. 542, prints as a correction that the Elijah who married Lucy Washburn, belongs in the family of William Reed and Sarah Warren. There is no evidence of who or if Elijah, s/o William, actually married, but apparently simply because the family of Elijah and Lucy lived in Middleborough, where William lived, the assumption was made to connect him to this William.

While the strength of view #1 is somewhat based on speculation that such probate documents can be found, view #3 is merely matching of names with no evidence. Therefore, in conclusion, it is believed that the Elijah Reed who married Lucy Washburn was the son of Elijah and Sarah Reed. As always, further evidence may favor different conclusions.
