A tattered newspaper account (no date, no source), titled "Another Pioneer Gone," abstracted by Josephine Williams, 43570 Lake Hughes Rd., Lake Hughes, CA 93532 gives the following: Born March 11, 1795 in So. Carolina, father was James Maxwell ... while still a baby, family moved to Chuach River, NC where James ran a mill. In 1808 Maxwells moved to Indiana Territory, near present Greenville. In 1811 father, James, relocated to Lost River, Orange County. Joseph W. joined Rangers (to quell Indians) ... filed for land, Cave Springs, Indiana. Married, late 1815 to Miss Mary Finley, another pioneer family ... 12 children born 1816 to 1842. Mary died Oct. 1842. In 1851 Joseph W. remarried and had 6 more children. He was a devoted Whig, idolized Henry Clay, later became a Republican. Served as justice of peace in Orange County for many years. Owned 840 acres on Lost River (lost it somehow). In 1866 he moved to Howard County, IN. In 1878 moved to Lawrence, KS to live with Mrs. Lindley and Mrs. Newlin, his daughters by Mary Finley. Was active, read a lot, died in his sleep Jan. 26, 1881.
