- ↑ Besides the two older children recorded chronologically, three children are recorded in Springfield in a group: John b. 1669, Joseph b. 1671, and Sarah b. 1673 (Springfield VRs 1:31 or NEHGR 19:63). It is not clear if this means the father had left and came back, with perhaps John and Joseph born in Westfield and then Sarah in Springfield?
In Westfield records John and Sarah are the first two children recorded, with neither of the older children recorded, nor, problematically, Joseph. This might correspond to Sarah and before born in Springfield, and then the rest in Westfield. Unless the family moved back and forth...
From the Trowbridge book, the father, David, was granted land in Westfield in 1666, that he was supposed to settle on by the following spring. So some indications are that he might have moved by spring of 1667. A dairy of Edward Taylor mentions Goodman Ashley in Westfield in Dec 1671.
No clear picture emerges. Probably all three were born in Westfield, and for some reason, recording of Joseph's birth was overlooked.
