In 1807 Cyrus Downing built a cabin about a quarter mile from Alfred Ruggles, and Hawley Tanner built his cabin near that of Curtis. The Downing family had two children in their teens, George S. and Pamela. Mrs. Downing baked bread for the surveyors and boarded the mail carrier, Jeremiah Daniels. This young man made weekly trips to Cleveland. In that day it took a week to make the round trip when weather was bad. It is quite natural that Jeremiah and Pamela should fall in love. They were married at Huron in 1813.
