Elizabeth J. Staskievitz (March 14, 1914 - December 30, 2008)

Passed away on December 30, 2008 at the Gilbert Residence surrounded by loving family and friends. Born march 1914, in Redford, Michigan, the third of five children to Paul and Elizabeth (John) Wursthoff. Betty and her family moved to the “family farm” in Ypsilanti Township in 1920, where she attended Louden, Thorn, and Rooosevelt Schools. In 1934, she married Clements “Clem” Staskievitz and they built a home on the farm where they raised five children. Except for a few years when Betty worked outside the home for King-Seely, Universal Diecasting, and Edwards Brothers, she was a homemaker, and helped Clem when he operated his auto repair business from a shop next to the home. During WWII, Betty was active with women in the area knitting mittens , and cozy’s for servicemen and in the 1950s and 60s was a 4-H leader. A person who loved her family and friends, she had a great sense of humor and a quick “hi honey” for everyone. Betty lived in the home she and Clem built, until moving into the Gilbert Residence in 2006. She was preceded in death by Clem, the love of her life in 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony and Paul; a sister, Rose Kohler; infant grandson, Richard Vercruysse; granddaughter Kathleen (Staskievitz) Callahan and son-in-law, Mark Trombly. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister and is survived by her brother, Joseph (Vivian) Wusthoff of Ypsilanti; One Son, John (Ann) Staskievitz of Vanderbilt, MI; 4 daughters: Peggy (Dick) Vercruysse of Ypsilanti, Kay (Bert) Arbogast of Cape Coral, FL, Marianne Trombly of Plymouth and Trish (Dave) Woodside of Ypsilanti. In addition she is survived by 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Edmond Ertzbischoff as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Ypsilanti, MI. Contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the Gilbert Residence or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at the Janowiak Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday from 2-8 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass.
