Called "C.C." or Conrad, he fought in the Civil War. He enlisted in the 6th Ohio Cavalry (Company E) and was in all their engagements, including the siege of Richmond. He was at the surrender of Richmond. Conrad and Helen are both buried in the West Oshtemo Valley Cemetery in Oshtemo, Michigan. Christopher Conrad Gunn [sometimes name given as Conrad Christopher] enlisted as a private and left service with the rank of private. Soldier record: M552 roll 42

According to family history, he was in the campaign before Richmond and Petersburg. Was at Cold Harbor, Reams Station, Wilderness, Five Forks, Weldon R. R., Deep Bottom, and at the surrender of Lee to Grant. He had 3 horses shot out from under him, but only received one minor injury (to a leg). C.C. was two years in Sheridan's cavalry. His carbine had to be cocked each time before firing.
