Leister and Eloise met in February of 1938. Their first date was on Valentine's Day. They were married by Rev. Ernest A. Addison in Knightstown. Ernest was Eloise's Aunt Nora's husband. He was blind.

Eloise was working at a cafeteria in Indianapolis on the Circle. They got married that day, and then she had to get back to work and worked that day until 7 p.m. because someone else couldn't work. They drove to Terre Haute that night borrowing Leister's brother Jack's car.

They lived in an apartment on 16th Street in Indianapolis. It had roaches!

The wedding was written up in the newspaper: "DOWNEY-BEERY The marriage of Miss Eloise Beery of Indianapolis, daughter of Mrs. Grace E. Beery of Westfield, to Leister Downey of Indianapolis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Downey, of Princeton, took place Sunday morning at 6:00 o'clock. The beautiful ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Ernest A. Addison, pastor of the First Christian Church at his home, assisted by Mrs. Addison, an aunt of the bride. A wedding breakfast followed the ceremoney. The bride was beautiful in a gown of white lace over pink satin, with white accessories, white hat and pink and white corsage. The bridesmaid was Miss Dorothy Bond and Everett Downey, brother of the groom, was best man. The bide was one of Westfield's most popular young women. After graduating from the high school she took a business course at Indianapolis. Those witnessing the ceremony were Mrs. Grace E. Beery and Miss Doris Beery of Westfield, mother and sister of the bride; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Downey and Jack Downey, brothers of the groom, and Misses Doris Belkner and Martha Grunden of Knightstown. Aftter a motor trip south Mr. and Mrs. Downey will be at home in Indianapolis."
