May 17, 1787.
WHEREAS Asa Lupton, Son of William Lupton Deceased & Grace Lupton, in the County of Frederick in Virginia, and Hannah Hank of the same place, Daughter of John Hank Deceased & Margaret Hank of Rockingham County, having Declared their Intentions of Marriage with each Other before several Monthly Meetings of the People Called Quakers at Hopewell in the County of Frederick aforesaid, According to the good Order used amongst them and having Consent of Parents, their said proposals of Marriage was allowed of by the Said Meeting..
NOW these are to Certify whom it may Concern That for the full Accomplishing their said Intentions this 17th Day of the Fifth Month in the Year of Our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty Seven, they the Said Asa Lupton & Hannah Hank, Appeared in a Publick Meeting of the Said people at Hopewell in the County of Frederick Aforesaid, and the said Asa Lupton taking the said Hannah Hank by the Hand, did in a Solemn Manner Openly declare that he took her to be his Wife promesing to be unto her through Divine assistance a Loving and faithfull husband untill Death should Separate them, or words to the Same Effect, and then and there in the Said Assembly she the Said Hannah Hank did in Like manner Openly Declare, That She took him the Said Asa Lupton to be her Husband, Promising with Divine Assistance to be unto him a Loving and faithful wife untill Death Should Separate them, or words to the same Effect..
[p.239]MOREOVER they the said Asa Lupton and Hannah Hank, she According to the Custom of Marriage Assuming the name of her Husband, did as a further Confirmation thereof then & there to these Presents Set their Hands..
