Were these ALLISONS related, by chance, to the MARTHA ALLISON who was the first wife of JAMES BUCHANAN of Augusta Co., VA? They were married about 1722, and had children who included a son named ROBERT. I am descended from their son, ARCHIBALD BUCHANAN (ca.1728- 1806) who married (1) NANCY BOWEN; and (2) her sister, AGNES BOWEN McFERRIN. The latter couple came to Davidson Co., TN.

I am descended from Andrew Steele and Martha Buchanan through their son, John Steele. John Steele, twin brother of James Steele, was born about 1786 probably in Davidson County, N.C. , now Tennessee, and died in DeKalb county, TN August 4, 1871. He is probably buried in the Steele Cemetery near Sligo Dock on the Caney Fork River in DeKalb County. John's first wife was Jane Compton, whom he married in Wilson county, TN in 1810. She died sometime before 1844 in DeKalb County, TN. His second wife was Mahala Goodman, whom he married in DeKalb county. John Steele served with the 39th U.S. Infantry, Capt. Hallum's Company, during the War of 1812, and participated in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in present-day Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He was discharged in Florida in 1814, and returned home. He applied for his pension in 1871, but died before it could be approved. His widow, Mahala Steele, then applied for a widow's pension in 1873, which was approved. She died sometime between 1880 and 1900, and is also believed to have been buried in the Steele Cemetery near Sligo. To get there from Smithville, go East on 70 across the Caney Fork at Sligo until you get to Johnson's Chapel Road, turn there and go north about one-fourth mile. There is a dirt road on the right that leads to the cemetery. Only slate rock markers, and no legible tombstones. This is believed to be on or in the vicinity of the Elrod place, and south of Anderson Cemetery. Another Steele cemetery is now called Maynard Cemetery, at Cherry Hill, just off 56 after crossing Center Hill Lake going North out of Smithville. There is a little yellow store on the right. Turn there and keep to the right on the dirt road which deadends at the cemetery. this is just before you get to Silver Point and I-40. Will [email protected]
