[edit] 1920 CensusIn 1920, Albert and Bertha Leavitt live in a duplex they rent from Albert's parents, Israel and Rose Leavitt at Green Point on Harpswell's Great Island. Albert is 27 and Bertha is 33; both are described as "white." Albert and Bertha are born in Maine, as are their parents, except for Albert's mother, Rose Leavitt, who was born in Connecticut. Albert and his father are both fishermen, involved in "Shore fishing" according to the census. The next two households are Gustavus and Ira Toothaker, perhaps Bertha's brothers? An Alfred, Daniel and Samuel Toothaker all live nearby. Albert's uncle, Elisha Leavitt, also lives nearby. [edit] 1930 CensusIn 1930, Albert and Bertha Leavitt still share a house they rent from Albert's parents, Israel and Rose Leavitt on Green Point Road on Harpswell's Great Island. Albert is 37 and Bertha is 42. They were 21 and 27, respectively, when they first married. Both can read and write English. Both are born in Maine, as are their parents, except for Albert's mother, Rose Leavitt, who was born in Connecticut. Albert and his father are lobster fisherman, and neither are veterans. As in 1920, there are several Toothaker and Leavitt families that live nearby. [edit] 1940 CensusIn 1940 (and in 1935), Albert and Bertha Leavitt live on "Orr's Island Pd." It's unclear if this is the same location from the 1930 and 1920 census. Albert's mother, Rose L Leavitt, a widow, lives with them. The House is owned by Albert and is valued at $500. Albert is 47 and Bertha is 53. Both have completed 8th grade. Rose Leavitt, age 67, has completed 4th grade. Abert worked 30 hours as a lobster fisherman in the last week of March, 1940, and worked 50 weeks in 1939. Bertha does the house work, and Rose is coded as "Other." Since Albert works for himself, he didn't receive any wages in the past year. Image Gallery
