Israel and R. L Leavitt live in Harpswell, Maine with their son, Albert. All are categorized as "white." Israel is born Jan 1854 (age 46), and R L was born June 1872 (age 28). She and Israel have been married for 20 years (this is Israel's second marriage). Israel is a fisherman, working for himself, as are almost all of his neighbors. All three can read and write, and Albert has attended school in the last year.

Two of Israel's brothers, Elisha and Charles Leavitt, live nearby with their families. Both are also fishermen, though Elisha has a farm as well.
