Description

Often referred to as "GOFA", most Olmste(a)d family researchers are familiar with this helpful book and many current Olmste(a)d families in the U.S. can trace their lineage to individuals contained therein.

James Olmsted (1580-1640) and his nephew, Richard Olmsted (1612-1684), descendants of James Olmsted and Jane Bristow, immigrated from England to Massachusetts at separate times. James immigrated in 1632 and, after several moves, settled at Hartford, Connecticut. Richard immigrated to join James in 1636. Descendants and relatives lived throughout the United States, and also in Canada. Includes some history of the Olmsted Family Association, its organization, reunions and officers

The first four supplements were published in 1914, 1920, 1923, 1928. As of 2022, only the 3rd and 4th supplements are available online - see related links below.

In 1978/1979, the four supplements were bound with the original and reissued in a single volume. As of 2022, this version is not available online - see related links below.

Advisory committee: John Bartow Olmsted, Right Rev. Charles T. Olmsted, Mrs. Henry S. Stearns, Prof. Everett Ward Olmsted, ex-off.

Notes of Caution

  • The authors acknowledge that the surname was spelled both as "Olmsted" and "Olmstead", but chose to use only the "Olmsted" spelling throughout the book. Therefore, a listing in this book is not proof that "Olmsted" was the preferred spelling for a particular individual.
  • While the information is very useful, errors do exist. The primary sources used by the original compilers were never published and have been lost to history. Additional sources should be added to cited individuals whenever possible.
