Te Kopuru is located just 11 Km from Dargaville on the main road down the Pouto Peninsula. The village itself is home for about 500 people and was originally the centre of the Kauri log industry.

A number of sawmills and ship building firms were located here, as the Kauri dried up the population dwindled and the township is now dependent largely on the farming and horticulture community.

Northern Wairoa History

Many small settlements along the Wairoa River have an interesting tale to tell and Te Kopuru is just one of them. Constructed around the Kauri industry and in its heyday boasting a population of well over three thousand, with banks, a pool hall, shops, a cinema, post office and in later days a bus and taxi service. A boon to those that had always relied on the river for transport and as it was later to prove also the death knell off river transport.

Probably the greatest resource for information on Te Kopuru and the wider district of the Kaipara is "The Great Northern Wairoa" written by EK Bradley and first published in 1972 and revised 10 years later. It is now out of print but a copy is held in the Dargaville Library.

The moving of the health facilities to Dargaville in the 1950's created a much larger hospital with better facilities. However the needs of the locals are still being served, Dargaville Medical Centre operate a surgery on Norton Street Te Kopuru and locals can consult their Dr twice a week. The surgery also contains a two bedroomed unit used for sort term stay by locum doctors.
