It is located on the Bristol Channel coast, southwest of Bristol, spanning the coast between the bounding high ground of Worlebury Hill and Bleadon Hill. It includes the suburbs of Oldmixon, West Wick and Worle (#37). Its population according to the 2011 UK census was 76,143. Although there is evidence in the local area of occupation since the Iron Age, it remained a small village until the 19th century when it became a seaside resort with two piers, connected with local towns and cities by a railway. The growth continued until the second half of the 20th century, when tourism declined and some local industries closed. During the 21st century it has been undergoing a regeneration programme. Weston super Mare became an urban district in 1894 and a municipal borough (for which there had to be a minimum population of 30,000) in 1937. From 1974 to 1996 Weston super Mare was located in the modern non-metropolitan county of Avon. On Avon's demise, Weston was returned to Somerset and became the largest urban centre in the North Somerset District. NOTE: The mostly unpopulated island of Steep Holm in the Bristol Channel is considered part of the civil parish of Weston super Mare and has therefore been redirected here. • Three maps on the A Vision of Britain through Time website illustrate the changes in political boundaries over the period 1830-1945. All have expanding scales and on the second and third this facility is sufficient that individual parishes can be inspected.

• Maps provided by the National Library of Scotland are also very useful. This map is currently set to an area now in the Sedgmoor District as it existed in the late 19th century, but can be moved to anywhere in the county using a variety of background maps. There is a very good search facility.

• The Victoria History of the Counties of England – History of the County of Somerset, produced by The Institute of Historical Research at the University of London is a scholarly website with articles tracing the history of individual parishes which are sorted into their hundreds, the early subdivisions of the county. It traces the ownership of estates and manors, describes the local church in detail, and usually provides a map of each parish. The volumes for Somerset are much more recent than those for other counties. It appears to be a work in progress, only covering about half the county so far.
