Mount Hope Cemetery is a park cemetery established in 1885, about 20 years after most other Chicago cemeteries, under the authority of the State of Illinois. It was situated on the highest land to be found in southern Cook County. By 1885, granite had become the prevailing material for headstones, softer marble and limestone materials having fallen out of fashion. Among the major installations are mausoleums and tombs for Arquilla, Blake, Collins, Cooper, Jocelyn, Jouris, Kernott, Matthews, Swift, and Veeder. There is a plot devoted to the Press Club of Chicago; a section devoted to veterans of the Civil War, established by the veterans organization Grand Army of the Republic; Rotary International and Lions Club plots.
