Llansannor (Welsh: Llansanwyr) is a small hamlet in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales.

It is bounded on the north by the parishes of Llanilid and Llanharry, on the east by Ystradowen, on the southeast by Llanblethian, on the southwest by Pen llin, and on the west by St. Mary Hill. From 1894 until 1974 it was part of the Cowbridge Rural District in the historic county of Glamorgan.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Llansannor from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"LLANSANNOR, a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; on the river Sannor, 2 miles N of Cowbridge [railway] station. Post town, Cowbridge. Acres: 1,798. Real property: £1,513. Population: 197. Houses: 42. The property is divided among a few. Llansannor House is now a farm-house. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Llandaff. Value: £105. Patron: Sir J. Bailey, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Senewyr, and is not very good."

The community (or civil parish) in which the former parish of Llansannor exists is currently unknown to the contributor.

Research Tips

  • GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
  • The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
