Aismunderby-with-Bondgate was a "township" which was completely absorbed into Ripon in 1894. Beacause it has a cathedral, Ripon is considered a "city". The Ripon area was in the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, when it was transferred to the Harrogate District of North Yorkshire, England which was created at that time.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Aismunderby-with-Bondgate from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"AISMUNDERBY-WITH-BONDGATE, a township in Ripon parish, partly within Ripon borough, W. R Yorkshire. Acres: 1,055. Population: 620. Houses: 149."

Historically, Aismunderby-with-Bondgate was in the ecclesiastical parish of Ripon in the lower division of the wapentake of Claro.
