William Newton went to the Civil War as early as 16 years of age according to family tradition. No official records have been found to substantiate this. After his first wife Eliza died, their son, William Walker remained with his maternal grandparents, Sam & Clarinda Smith. On the 1870 U.S. Census, Collin County, Texas, William Newton is shown as living with his parents William W. & Margaret, with no wife or child. William Newton remarried and moved to Uvalde County and William Walker remained in Collin County all his life.
