He enlisted in the army 8 Aug 1862 (9 days before his marriage) as a private, and mustered in on 11 Sep 1862, in Company E, New York 10th Heavy Artillery Regiment. He deserted at Fort Richardson, Virginia 20 Dec 1862.[4][8], exactly one week after his uncle Eugene Howard was killed in action
