Mary was a trained teacher who went out to New Zealand on a special immigrant ship called "The Carisbrook Castle", in 1874, to become the governess to the children of the New Zealand Prime Minister. After Alexander died, Mary lived with her son William Hugh in Kilbirnie, Wellington.
