The original family name was DeBoterell. The earliest record of the name is Peter DeBoterell who was living in Straffordshire in the twelfth century. Sir John was knighted on the battlefield for valorous conduct in 1230 and received a tract of land called Whytemere, or White Meadow, whence came his name.
