Joshua W. Hauck, son of George and Hannah Hauck, was born in July of 1827 or 1828 in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. A biographical sketch of his son Samuel listed Joshua's birthdate as 7 July 1827, while Joshua's tombstone shows a birthdate of 31 July 1828. On the 1830 census in Frederick Township the household of George Hauck contained a male, age 0 to 5, presumed to be his son Joshua. Joshua was a tailor. He appeared on the census of 1850 in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, where he was living with the family of Mary Miller, age 58, next door to a George Hauck, age 29.

Joshua W. Hauck married Sophia Weand, daughter of Samuel Weand, on 27 September 1851 in Swamp, Montgomery County. Joshua and Sophia appeared on the census of 1860 in Frederick Township with their children Hannah, William, Washington and Samuel. Also living with the family was Emmaline Kalb, a 16 year-old tailor's apprentice. Joshua listed his personal estate as being worth $200.

On 23 August 1862, Joshua enlisted as a private in the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry Volunteers, commanded by Col. J. H. Kellogg. Joshua served as a bugler in Company L, commanded by Captain Theodore W. Bean. Joshua stated "that while at the Battle of Gettysburg July 3rd, 1863 being about three days in the Engagement and from overexhausting himself having no rest he took sick with Chronic Rheumatism and heart disease and was immediately sent to the Carver's Hospital Washington D.C. Was afterwards transfered to the V. R. C. Comp. 'F' 6th Regt." Joshua was discharged on 16 September 1865 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After the war Joshua lived in Zieglerville. He moved to Perkiomenville, Montgomery County in April 1866.

Joshua and Sophia appeared on the census of 1870 in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County with their children Samuel, Sarah, Francis and Harrison. They were listed on the census of 1880 in Marlborough Township with their children Harrison, Sarah, Francis, Anna, Emma and Lena.

Joshua W. Hauck died on 2 February 1883 in Perkiomenville at age 55 of dropsy of the heart and pulmonary phthisis complicated with neuralgia and rheumatism.

In 1895, a biographical sketch of Joshua's son, Samuel Hauck, appeared in Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Of Joshua it says: "He was educated in the public schools and then learned the trade of tailor at the Swamp. When the Civil war broke out in 1861, he enlisted and served three full years with distiction. He was in the heat of the fight in numerous battles, among them being Gettysburg. After returning from the war he resumed his business as a tailor,first at Zeiglersville an later at Perkiomenville. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Reformed church. He was also a prominent member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias."

He was also a prominent member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Hauck, senior, is the father of eleven children, as follows: William, Hannah, George, Samuel, the subject of this sketch; Sally, Joshua, who is dead; Harry, Francis, Anna, Lessa and Emma."
