Facts and Events
Notes John Henry Wards father was killed in the Civil War. His mother moved the family to Texas (about 1863) in an ox wagon and Mr. Ward homesteaded the land that is still in the Ward family today owned by Morris Ward LDS -- obit IN MEMORY OF MY FRIEND To The Review: "For he was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and faith; and much people was added unto the Lord,"--Acts 11: 24. John Henry Ward was born December 20, 1847, and died February 7, 1941. He was born in Arkansas and came to Texas in early childhood. At the beginning of the Civil War his father, having enlisted , the responsibility of caring for the family was left upon his 13 year-old shoulders. Early in life he embraced religion, uniting with the Methodist church, to which he remained true. It was my privilege and pleasure to form and acquaintance with him near fifty years ago, and in my earlier ministry it was my pleasure to serve as his pastor and he as my steward. His advice and council was fatherly and full of wisdom. One of this main virtues was Christian stewardship. He was loyal to his pastor and his church and he was full of the Holy Ghost and faith. His presence and his prayers were full of light, power and inspiration and many were brought unto a knowledge of the Lord because of him. He visited often in our home. We were all glad to have him, for he brought an atmosphere of sunshine and gladness that added to our faith and new hope. On December 20th we had our last social day with him as we enjoyed a dinner in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Welch, given in honor of her father's 93rd birthday. Uncle Henry never sacrificed on the wayside altar of sin. He never used tobacco or liquor nor did he ever take the name of the Lord in vain. He loved to pray and to sing. One of his favorite songs was " How Beautiful Heaven Must Be". No doubt if we were privileged to hear his song today in that choir where everybody sings his words would be " I've found it so! Uncle Henry learned that to die well one must have lived well and though he walked through the valley of the shadow of death, with his Lord as a staff to lean upon, how well could he say, "I Will fear No Evil." May I say to you noble sons, Daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters relatives and friends, cheer up and press forward to the mark of the prize of the high calling as it is in Christ Jesus. " Life we have been long together, Though cloudy and through pleasant weather, 'Tis hard to part with friends so dear. Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh or tear, Then steal away, give little warning. Say not goodbye but in some brighter cline, Bid me good mornining." H, C.
