Biography
John S. Schwager, son of Franklin Schwager and Sarah Schuler, was born on 6 January 1842 in Pennsylvania. John appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of his parents in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His father, Franklin Schwager, was killed in an accident in May 1858 at D. Sieszholz's gunpowder plant in Montgomery County. John appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of his mother, Sarah Schwager, in Marlborough Township. John appeared on the census of 1870 in Marlborough Township with the family of shoemaker Benjamin Zeiler.8
John married Hannah Hauck, daughter of Joshua W. Hauck and Sophia Weand, in 1872. John and Hannah appeared on the census of 1880 with their children Annie, Franklin, John, Sophia and Elizabeth in Marlborough Township. Also living with the family was John's cousin Susanna Schwager. John and Hannah Schwager were tailoring, possibly working for Hannah father, who was living near by. John was a powder maker. At some point, John worked at a gun powder mill along the Unami Creek in Sumneytown, Pennsylvania. In February 1894 the plant blew up, destroying nearby buildings and killing one man.
John, Hannah, and daughter Lena appeared on the census of 1900 on a rented farm in Marlborough Township. In 1900 John S. Schwager was the neighbor of his son Franklin Schwager, his son-in-law Richard Lee Clayborne, and William Hauck in Marlborough Township. John and Hannah attended Freedom Reformed Church, also in Sumneytown.
John's wife, Hannah Schwager, died on 16 June 1907 in Sumneytown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. John S. Schwager died on 5 March 1914 in Marlborough Township at age 72 of chronic Brights disease. He was buried on 10 March 1914 in Sumneytown Cemetery.
Family legend says that John had a total of twenty-three children and that Hannah may have been his third wife, but there is no evidence of other wives or children.
