John, son of Elizabeth Catherine Smith and Leonard Oller, was born October 1843 in Scott County, Missouri. John is enumerated in the 1860 US Census in Alexander County, living …

John enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He is found in Company I, 60th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on July 12, 1862. At this date he would have missed the bitter siege of Corinth, Mississippi, in which his step brother Alfred fought. John joined Alfred Oller as Sherman’s Army came across Northern Alabama to attack Nashville, Tennessee in late September 1862. The Unit was in Nashville until July of 1863 when they moved toward Chattanooga and the infamous March to the Sea during 1864 finally spending Christmas in Savannah, Georgia. John would then be joined by his younger brother, and this researcher’s Great Grandfather, Frank Oller, in February 1865 as Sherman moved North through the Carolinas.

John Oller and Charlotte Wagner Marriage

John married Charlotte Wagner about 1867 in Scott County, Missouri. Charlotte was born in 1850. They had seven children.

William S. Oller was born about 1867 or 1868 most likely in Alexander County, Illinois.

Charles L. Oller was born in 1869 most likely in Alexander County, Illinois.

John and the family to date are enumerated in the 1870 US Census in Alexander County. Charles is not enumerated with the family in the 1880 US Census. Therefore Charles, who would have been only 11 by that date, had most likely died during the decade.
