Facts and Events
[edit] OriginsEvidence of the location of his origins or when he emigrated remains elusive. [edit] Life in New EnglandBy 1642, John Moore was in Sudbury: in September of the same year he bought of Edmund Rice [father of his soon-to-be son-in-law] a house and land situated in the east part of the town, in the southerly part of what is now the town of Wayland. By this time, he was also married to his second wife, Elizabeth-- either daughter or step-daughter of Philemon Whale. 1645: He took the oath of fidelity at Sudbury July 9; the same year bought of John Stone a dwelling house and house lot, and all other lands and meadows belonging to Stone by virtue of his right in the beginning of the plantation of Sudbury. 1653: He subscribed to the covenant of Lancaster "11th first mo. 1653," and forty acres of land were laid out in his name, and the first grant of lots (1653. 30th 9mo") [edit] LegacyOn August 23, 1668, he made his will, in which he refers to his "age". He died Jan. 6, 1673-4, and his will was probated April 7, 1675 (Worcester Co. Probate, 10921). He mentions his sons John of Lancaster, William, Jacob, Joseph, to whom he leaves his house, and Benjamin; also his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Henry Rice, Mary, wife of Daniel Stone, and Lydia, wife of James Cutler. His widow Elizabeth was named as Executrix. The inventory of his estate showed a valuation of L804:7:0. She died Dec. 14, 1690. The name was written variously, More, Moor and Moore, and is derived from the Gaelic, from Mor; meaning great, chief, tall, mighty. Children of John (perhaps not in their birth order):
