Fourteen years of age in 1880, John was a cotton mill worker and student. In the 26 April 1883 edition of the Walker County Messenger, there is a marriage announcement for John F. Coker.

In the 1900 U.S. census he was no longer living with his father and probably was the John Coker enumerated in the 1900 U.S. census in Cold Water, Chattooga County, Georgia. This John Coker was listed as single, 33 years old, and an employee of the Miller Orchard Company. The enumerator stated that he was given the information on the twenty employees of the company by the superintendent of the company; that the employees were there on 1 June 1900 but all left because of a case of small pox.

The John Coker household was enumerated in the 1910 U.S. census in Muscogee County, Georgia as follows: Page 239B, 2905 Second Avenue, Dwelling 40, Family 40.
