Facts and Events
JOHN ARCHDALE, of Abbots Hall, Darsham, and afterwards of Castle Archdale, Co. Fermanagh, was the eldest son of Martin and Barbara Archdale. He was born on December 30th 1578, and was baptised at All Hallows Barking on January 4th following. He inherited his Suffolk property under his father's will in 1597, including Abbotts Hall mansion in Darsham. On January 14th 1600-1, three years after John had inherited the Darsham property, he married Frances Honnyng or Honings, the seventeen year old daughter of the local gentleman Edward Honnyng MP. The five children of that union were baptised at Darsham, where John resided until his departure for Ireland. In 1612 he was granted land in Fermanagh, as one of the 'Undertakers' in the Jacobean Plantation of Ulster; John however did not move to Fermanagh until after the death of his wife Frances in early 1614. By 1615 he had built a castle on the Northeast side of Lower Lough Erne, in the Barony of Lurg which he left to his son Edward on his death in 1621.
