PRESCOTT, Elisabeth, w. [2d w. dup.] Jonas, jr., [died] Dec. 27, 1739.
- Source:Prescott, William. Prescott Memorial, or, A Genealogical Memoir of the Prescott Families in America,p. 53, says Jonas m. (1) Elizabeth Spaulding, when the intentions, the births of his children, and the death record all give the name of his wife as Esther. She died 4 Oct 1730 according to Westford VRs, but he reports it as 27 Dec 1729, an obvious corruption of the death date of the second wife.
So, when he says the second wife is "Elizabeth Howard of Chelmsford", we don't know whether to believe him. He offers no further information. But he is faithfully copied by several sources (including the above garbage), such as several Cutter works (no surprise), Source:Annett, Albert. History of Jaffrey (Middle Monadnock) New Hampshire, and Source:White, Almira Larkin. White Family Quarterly.
The intentions say Elizabeth Harwood. The only Elizabeth Howard born in Chelmsford, d/o Benjamin and Mary, is b. 1717, so would be too young to marry in 1731. There is an Elizabeth "Harwod", d/o Nathaniel and Mary (Barron), b. 1701. Source:Harwood, Watson H. New England Harwood Genealogy, p. 12, shows no further information beyond her birth, but she would appear to be a very likely candidate. So it appears perhaps Prescott made yet another error?
- Granddaughter Elizabeth Prescott is mentioned in will of Nathaniel Harwood of Chelmsford.
