Boyd became an American citizen in 1919 (N1) despite the different spelling of his name. He is shown as being a veteran of the U.S. Military, so must have served in the First World War. On his passport application there is a note from the Director of Military Intelligence, giving him permission to travel to England (to perform "as an entertainer for duty with the A.E.F, in connection with the Y.M.C.A" with his wife Katie), so perhaps he was in intelligence in the war.
