William Broughall1817 - 1887

This type of box was commonly used to store important legal documents. Since both the names on the box are marked deceased we can be fairly certain that it did not belong to either of them. The most obvious candidate would therefore be their legal representative, and to share the same box they would have to be fairly closely connected. From the 1881 Census returns we know that Ann Quillish was living with her uncle, William Broughall in Hastings, Sussex, England. When William died in 1877 Ann was an executor along with Benjamin William Simpson of Simpson and Cullingford, Solicitors of 85 Gracechurch Street, London. When Ann died in 1899, Benjamin William Simpson was also one of the executors. Thus the box was probably the property of Simpson and Cullingford.
