I have found that, especially around the turn of the century, that neighbors often became family. I am documenting my family's neighbors here. To save time I will link the census image to the family units, except in my family line where I link to individuals


Transcription of Graf households Living very close together are three Graf households. Caroline Graf, Paul Graf and Wilhelm Graf. Also the household of a Graf daughter - Anna Graf Schoppa.

Caroline, born 1840, is the matriarch of the family. At this time she is widowed. She immigrated from Germany in 1887. Still living with her are Herman Graf, born 1877, immigrated 1887; and Bertha, born 1883, immigrated 1887.

Paul Graf, born1866, immigrated in 1884. He is farming. He lives with his wife Emma Graf, born 1873 in Texas. They have had 4 children, but only 2 are still living. Frieda Graf, born 1896 and Esta Graf, born 1900. Also living with Paul and Emma are his children from his first marriage: Selma born 1887, Gerhard born 1891, and Clara born 1894.

Wilhelm Graf is also farming. He was born in Germany in Dec. 1867 and immigrated in 1881. He is living with his wife Thersea, born June 1875, also immigrated 1881. They have three children, Reinhold, born 1897, Emil, born 1898, and baby Laura, age 4 months. There is also a boarder living with the family: Carl Koehler, her is working as a farm hand. Born 1877 and immigrated 1891.

Traugott Schoppa and Anna Graf are living next door to Caroline. Traugott is 27, b. Jun 1872 in Texas to German parents, he is a farmer. Anna is also 27, born in Germany. She immigrated in 1887. The census lists her having 3 living children. But the oldest child in the house must be a step-child to Anna. She is Selma, b. Jan 1894 in Texas. The other children are Bertha b. Dec 1896 and Walter b. Sept 1898.

All of the families are renting the land they are farming.
