Bethiah Kemp claimed that Joseph Sanderson (1680-c.1736) was the father of her illegitimate son Joseph, born in 1714, and Sanderson was required to pay child maintenance. Bethiah's son took the surname Sanderson. DNA testing of male descendants of 3 sons of Bethiah Kemp's illegitimate son establishes that this was not true.

It is now believed that the father of Joseph Sanderson (born 1714) was a Lakin, a descendant of William Lakin (Abt 1595-1633) of Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England.

This article explains how DNA tests of male descendants of 3 sons of Bethiah Kemp's illegitimate son Joseph Sanderson (b. 1714) establish that he was not the son of Joseph Sanderson as Bethiah claimed. His father is now believed to be a descendant of William Lakin (Abt 1595-1633) of Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England.
