PUTNAM, Benja[min] [Lt. CT.R.], and Sarah Holton, July 1, 1706.
The typical secondary source says that Benjamin's second wife was Sarah, the widow of Benjamin Houlton. The basis for this assertion is not known. Benjamin d. 1689 age 33, leaving a widow and a posthumous son Benjamin. This marriage in 1706 would require that his widow waited 17 years to remarry.
Besides her age being appropriate, two other circumstantial facts suggest this might be correct. First is the deed where Benjamin Houlton's father, Joseph, deeds to his son's widow. The fact that the deed was recorded about the time of the marriage to Benjamin Putnam may have been the result of finalizing all pending matters.
Another deed Essex Deeds Vol. 21, folio 84, wherein the son of Benjamin Houlton, Benjamin Jr., and Benjamin Putnam jointly buy some land, suggesting a close relationship.
