Surnames - related [10 October 2007]

I am confused about some of the "help" information. For example, what earthly relation does the surname Macieiczyk have to Matthews? All I can see is they both start with Ma. So why would it be on the list of surnames on that page? It seems to me some of the "help" information is pretty far out.--Cheryl 17:51, 3 October 2007 (EDT)

When we created the surname index, we typed in alternate spellings and derivations from various sources and also include names encountered from our initial crawl genealogy web sites. If a name is followed by WeRelate agent, the computer found it had enough in common with the root name to be included. But computers aren't people and sometimes make connections that a person would not agree with. If you find a WeRelate agent name that is obviously wrong, please edit the list. If the name is followed by a recognized source please leave it alone. Believe it or not, people who were born Petulengro immigrated as Smith, and Fikuppucci became Phillips, at least according to Oxford Dictionary of Surnames. That's about the most authoritative source I know of.

You are welcome to edit name lists if you see problems and to add alternate spelling/derivations when you have them. This will update the search and help your cousins in their search. Right now, the system updates overnight, soon we will be updating the indexes every fifteen minutes. Hope this helps :) Thanks so much for your input and interest. Please let me know if you have any questions. --sq 19:31, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
