Robert Ramsey and Margaret Beard [22 February 2009]

Can we compare notes and documentation on this couple? There are some researchers that believe that this Robert Ramsey married twice, 1) Margaret Beard, 2) Margaret Moore, and the placement of Robert's children are in question (because of the multiple undetermined birth dates of his children). Can you please review the "Robert Ramsey and Margaret Beard (2)" page and see if we can check sources and determine if they can be merged? I'm especially concerned about the varying birthdates of his children, so I'd appreciate it if you could share the sources of those dates and maybe we can come to a "common understanding"....

Thanks and best regards,

Parents of Robert Ramsey who married Margaret Beard [22 February 2009]

I also noticed that you have the parents of Robert Ramsey who married Margaret Beard as Robert Ramsey who married Isabella Beard. Based upon research by several people researching the Augusta County, VA Ramsey's it is apparent that this Robert Ramsey's parents are Robert Ramsey and Sarah. "The Widow" Sarah Ramsey migrated to the Beverley Manor section of Orange/Augusta County, VA between 1738-1744:

Sarah Ramsey acquired land from William Beverley based upon the following:

LIST OF DEEDS The following is a list of deeds of land made by William Beverly on his manor, the name of the person to whom it was sold, and the number of acres; between 1738 and 1744:

41) Sarah Ramsey, 390 acres;

THIS Robert Ramsey (known as "Robert Ramsey of Beverley Manor" to many researchers) was proven to have owned land adjacent to Sarah Ramsey (his mother) in the following:

From Augusta County, VA records: (this shows Robert Ramsey, most likely Sarah Ramsey's son having land adjoining Sarah, when she transfers 309 acres (the same 390 acres that she had acquired before 1744) to John Fulton)

Page 385.—15th August, 1753. Sarah Ramsey, widow, to John Fulton. 309 acres in Beverley Manor, cor. Robert Ramsey. Teste: Hugh Fulton, David Hay, Robert Ramsey, Jno. Kerr.

Now, let's move on to Robert Ramsey, who married Isabella Beard:

The Robert Ramsey who married Isabella Beard is (according to many researchers) about the same age as Robert Ramsey who married Margaret Beard, but probably not directly related to him, since there are no apparent records between the two Ramsey families. This Robert Ramsey is known as "Robert Ramsey of the Great River of Cow Pasture", by many researchers. This Robert Ramsey was killed in the Indian Raid on Kerr's Creek on Oct. 10, 1759, as detailed in an article listed on Rootsweb. The identity of his children is somewhat undetermined, since they were only listed as "Robert Ramsey's orphans" in Augusta County, Virginia Court records. The only child that I have seen positively identified as a son of this Robert Ramsey, is Robert Ramsey, who as an "orphan" would have been younger than age 14 at the time of Robert Sr's death. So Robert Sr. would have most likely still been of "child bearing age" at the age of his death, which would have made him much younger than he appears in your file.

This Robert Ramsey is considered by some Ramsey researchers to be a probable brother of James Ramsey, who also settled near Robert in the "Cow Pasture" area of Augusta County. This James Ramsey was born abt. 1717, married a Margaret (surname unknown) bef. 1742 and had the following children: (there may have been more earlier)

1. William Ramsey, b. abt. 1742, Augusta County, d. 1824, m. Maria Nancy Boyd ii. Unknown Daughter, b. Est. 1743-1755, Augusta County, no further record iii. Margaret Ramsey, b. abt. 1748, North River Settlement, Augusta County, Virginia, d. Aft. Apr 1813, m. David Rogers iv. James Ramsey, b. 15 Apr 1753, North River Settlement, Augusta County, Virginia, d. Abt. 1848, Rutherford County, Tennessee, m. Rachel Price.

Back to Robert Ramsey:

Based upon the birthdate of his probable brother, James Ramsey, and the probable ages of his "orphans" in Augusta County records, I'd estimate his birthdate as between 1720-1732.

Further, Isabella Beard, the wife of this Robert Ramsey, married AFTER her husband's death, to Robert Hall, b. 1725, d. 1790, Orange County, North Carolina and they had the following children (there were probably more):

i. William James Hall, b. 1764 ii. Benjamin Hall, b. 1766 iii. John Hall, b. 1780 iv. Matthew Hamm, b. 1785

This Isabella is proven to be the same Isabella who married Robert Ramsey in the following record in Augusta County, VA:

From Chalkley's Augusta County, VA Court Judgements:

NOVEMBER 21, 1759. (318) Isabella Hall (now wife of Robert Hall), qualified admx. of her late husband, Robert Ramsey.

So if this Isabella that married Robert Ramsey was still having children in 1785 with Robert Hall, she could not have been nearly as old as in your record. I've estimated Isabella's birthdate, based upon her first and second marriages and birthdates of her children as sometime between 1728-1735. She has also been possibly identified as a daughter of Thomas Beard (1700-1769) and Jean McNutt (b. 1696), but that still has not been positively proven.

I'd appreciate it if you could review the above information and let me know if you concur with any of the finding of several researchers working this family, and also hope you'll be willing to share the sources of the information presented on your file. I think the goal on this site is to present the "most accurate" information on our ancestors possible, so I hope in the spirit of that goal you'll review your information accordingly.

Thanks and best regards,

Robert Ramsey [9 March 2009]

Please read the information added to the notes section of Robert Ramsey, who married 1) Margaret Beard and 2) Margaret Moore. You have placed him as the child of another Robert Ramsey, known as "Robert Ramsey of the Great Calfpasture", who was probably not related to the other Robert. Also, the two Roberts are about the same age (Robert "of the Great Calfpasture" is not old enough to have been Robert "Beverley Manor Robert Ramsey" Ramsey's father. I'd like to correct this information, so if I don't hear from you, I'll assume you are Ok with "fixing" the files for both Robert Ramseys. Robert Ramsey "Beverley Manor Robert" was most probably the son of the Widow Sarah Ramsey (some say the widow of another Robert Ramsey), who had land adjacent to Robert.

Thanks and best regards,

Robert Ramsey, d. 1759 [22 April 2009]

Noticed that you added the Estate Settlement for Robert Ramsey:

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Robert_Ramsey_%282%29

This is NOT the Robert Ramsey that died in 1759 in the Indian Raid and is listed in Augusta County records. This Robert Ramsey died in 1769 in Anson County, NC.

The Robert Ramsey that died in 1759 in Augusta County, VA is as follows:

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Robert_Ramsey_%2817%29

There were TWO different Robert Ramsey's in Early Augusta County that have been sometimes confused by researchers. I have documented the families and records for each of these Robert Ramsey's and also have moved the Estate Settlement citation to the correct Robert Ramsey.

Best regards,

Hello Ragnbone, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I noticed that you added text to a Category page. This type of conversation would need to be placed on the talk page of a specific person, as the user likely won't see the category you've created.
