James Carroll [5 September 2024]

James Carroll was born in 1848 in Gibraltar. His dad was Richard Carroll of the 56th Essex regiment, his mum was Mary. I'm assuming they were Irish as the christening was recorded in Latin . They moved with the garrison to Bermuda and in 1852 Mary Jane was born . In 1853 both Richard and Mary died of yellow fever. There is no record of Mary's burial but James is buried with fellow soldiers at st George cemetery on Bermuda. The orphan orphan children returned to the UK in December 1854. I'm still trying to find Mary but James went to the military asylum age 6 and at 14joined the army as a volunteer. He married Ellen Farrell in 1869 in Ireland. They're daughter married Jesse merchant, In turn they're daughter Winifred rita merchant married my grandad Henry Leigh. They had one child, my mum Rita--Gill 14:27, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
