Evangeline Sparks [29 July 2010]

Working on family history, came across your page for Evangeline. She is my Great Grandmother through her son Walter James Luxford (b. 1904, d 1961). Know that her half-sister Mary C immigrated to US, married Henry Lannert, Cleveland, OH. And I have a 1948 address for a Walter J Sparks in Los Angeles, CA, from my father's papers. Possibly her brother or nephew? Curious as to our possible connection, and wondering if you possibly have any additional information on her mother Mary, maiden name Smith? Or for her father Thomas. Looking forward to hearing from you - Sharon--Trafalgar 11:40, 28 July 2010 (EDT)

Hi there.

Evangeline was my great-grand aunt. She was born out of my second great-grandfather Thomas Spark's second marriage. All I know about his second wife, Mary Smith, is that she was born c. 1832 in Farnham, Surrey.

Mary C was actually not Evangeline's half-sister .... as she was a daughter of both Thomas Sparks and Mary Smith (m. 11 Mar 1860, St James, Southampton). Their children were:

Mary C Sparks b.1861 Walter J b.1864 Louis Edward b.1865 Ernest Arthur b.1868 Evangeline Elizabeth A b.1870 Edgar Gilbert b.1871

I'm afraid that I cannot add any further information about this part of the family after they got to USA, so cannot really comment on this Walter J Sparks living in Los Angeles in 1948. However, it seems possible that he was a son or grandson of Evangeline's brother Walter J Sparks, doesn't it?

As for ancestor Thomas!

b. 1824 Wooburn, Bucks m. 1842 Clerkenwell, London to Mary Ann HOWARD (d. 1855) THEIR CHILDREN Thomas Henry Howard SPARKS b.1842 Clerkenwell Frances Charlotte SPARKS, b.1844 Clerkenwell Herbert SPARKS, b.1847 Tipton, Staffs (goldsmith, painter of miniatures) (MY GREATGRANDFATHER)

Thomas' ancestors came from the Wooburn area of Bucks and were mainly blacksmiths and bargemen. Thomas had quite a varied career: 1842 Coachsmith, Clerkenwell 1847 Engine Fitter, Tipton, Staffs 1851 Dairyman, Clerkenwell 1969 Engineer, St Pancras 1881 Engine Fitter, Portsea, Hampshire

Hope that this information is of interest to you ..... we are definitely related!

best wishes
