Source notes

Hello, and welcome to WeRelate!

My name is Mary, and I am one of the administrators for WeRelate. In patrolling some of your newer pages, I noticed that some of the names of your sources were appearing as superscripted text. They may have some over that way when you uploaded your GEDCOM. In any case, we usually note a source by number, e.g., "S1", then provide detailed information about that source in the Source area on the page below the vital statistics. I have reformatted the sources William Harvey's page in this way. If you have more details to add to these sources, there are additional boxes you can use to provide more information.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask any of us for help or suggestions.

Thanks for your contributions to WeRelate!

GEDCOMs, etc. [7 August 2007]

You can upload any type of GEDCOM file that you wish. Just as one suggestion, you could do a descendant-based GEDCOM but limit the number of generations so that no (or few) living members appear, then check that GEDCOM with your own software to remove any living members who may have been copied. Once you have edited the GEDCOM to your satisfaction, upload that version to WeRelate. You can either link the people you have already entered manually, or if they will be in the uploaded GEDCOM, you can delete those entries and just "start over." Right now, there isn't a quick way to merge duplicate entries.

Parish Church in Hucknall [27 August 2007]

Hi, I wanted to let you know that we renamed the Place:Parish Church, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire that you entered to Place:St Mary Magdelene Church, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire because we're trying to standardize the titles of place pages to be the preferred name of the place followed by the title of the place that it's located in (and Hucknall Torkard is now called just Hucknall). I also created a page for Place:St Mary Magdelene Church, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire that redirects to Place:St Mary Magdelene Church, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire in case people try to look it up under the earlier name.--Dallan 15:11, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

Place:3357 2st St. Sam Framcoscp [6 September 2007]

Hi,

I am an administrator for WeRelate. I am sorry but we simply can't afford to store addresses. I had to delete Place:3357 2st St. Sam Framcoscp. You may create pages for cemeteries and hospitals, towns, counties, countries. Thankyou, :)--sq 16:10, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

I agree with your deletion of this address. It was a typo in my own FTM files and was transferred to the GEDCOM submitted. I've corrected my files and attempted to correct the San Francisco address. You may find other street addresses although I can't think of any others at the moment.--Ivanhoe 19:40, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

Surnames [8 May 2008]

Hi, WeRelate is going through some changes in preparation for the search upgrade next month. One of those changes was to eliminate the computer generated names from the surname index. If a name had a low incidence and listed "WeRelate similar spelling" as a source or had no source, the robot took it off the list. Please feel free to re-enter your surnames. From now on, all the low incidence surnames will be user added and thus relevant. This will improve the search function. Thanks for your patience.  :)--sq 22:41, 8 May 2008 (EDT)

Changes to Isle of Thanet, etc. [16 June 2016]

Our Places database on WeRelate calls for three parts to places in England (parish, county, England). All the places on the Isle of Thanet have been named separately. There is no need to add "Isle of Thanet" any more than one might in a postal address.

All places with Saint in their names have been altered to St. to achieve uniformity. If one person insists on Saint, another on St, and another on St., we cannot match up the places easily. Originally the idea was to use Saint throughout, but this would not have matched with the large number of places we drew in from the Family Search Library Catalog.

If a place given on a user page is written in red, it is not in our database. In order to make your places fit, I have altered them to match what is there. That way, should anyone come along to WeRelate looking for your surnames in Kent, they will be found. But red-lined places are not be sorted and there is less chance of "cousins" meeting up.

Please read our FAQ on places and the list of places on the Kent, England page. --Goldenoldie 21:39, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Not good [15 June 2018]

I don't know who you are but I have some advise for you, if you download a gedcom from somewhere make sure you remove dates for people prior to 110 yrs If you posted the gedcom on Joseph Morely on this site you have posted personal information for me and my family which has no business being online. I am willing to share family history and you are welcome to it. but I am extremely angry that you posted personal information on living people to this site. Please refrain from doing that in the future. I am assuming it was you since you are the only other person connected with the information. If I am wrong I am sorry. I am still very angry over this.--Madashell 18:24, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
